In Their Own Words – Foy

This Black History Month, we’re highlighting Black-Owned brands whose vision, leadership, and creativity continue to move the cannabis industry forward.

Foy began as a conversation about what cannabis should feel like intentional, clean, and rooted in care. Built around thoughtful formulation and real human needs, the brand set out to create products the founders genuinely use and trust. From the start, Foy paired wellness with impact, reinvesting in communities affected by cannabis criminalization and supporting causes centered on care, access, and justice.

We connected with the founders to learn more about their story, values, and vision.

What inspired you to start your brand?

Foy started from conversations between us about what we personally wanted from cannabis and how we wanted it to show up in our lives. We cared about how it made us feel, the ingredients, and the intention behind it. We wanted to build something we actually use ourselves and feel good sharing with the people around us.

What problem were you trying to solve in cannabis?

We wanted to create products made with clean ingredients that respect the plant and feel easy to trust. We believe clean and functional ingredients directly shape the experience. When cannabis is thoughtfully formulated, especially in edibles, it can feel more balanced, more supportive, and more consistent. Our focus has always been on providing a better overall experience that people feel confident choosing.

What does Black ownership in cannabis mean to you?

It means having the ability to build with care and lead with integrity. Ownership gives us the space to make decisions that reflect our values and stay connected to the impact we want to have.

What’s one challenge people don’t see about running a cannabis brand?

A lot of the challenge is internal. There are constant decisions to make, and it’s easy to overthink or feel pressure to move faster than you’re ready for. We’ve learned that not every decision is perfect, but the ones that matter most come from staying aligned with your values and being honest about what’s best for the consumer. Taking that approach helps you move forward with clarity, even when the path isn’t obvious.

What’s something you wish consumers understood about the industry?

That the experience is shaped by more than just dosage. Ingredients, formulation, and care all play a role. When those pieces come together thoughtfully, the experience tends to feel better overall.

What moment made you realize “this is really working”?

It’s been hearing directly from customers about how our products fit into their lives. We’ve had people share how it’s helped family members manage insomnia, symptoms dealing with MS, or how it’s helped them get through the day feeling uplifted without feeling groggy or weighed down. Those messages keep us going. They remind us that the intention has always been bigger than a product. We’re trying to create something that supports people, brings them together, and helps them show up for their lives with more clarity and purpose.

What product are you most proud of and why?

Our Daytime and Nighttime chews. We’re proud of them because they reflect how we think about edibles and the experience they should provide. We use clean, vegan ingredients with no corn syrup, no artificial flavors, and no synthetic ingredients. We also include multiple cannabinoids and organic adaptogens because we believe formulation matters. The goal was to create a functional high that feels supportive. Daytime is meant to feel uplifting and clear so you can move through your day. Nighttime is designed to help calm racing thoughts, support deeper sleep cycles, and help you wake up without feeling groggy.

How do you give back or stay connected to your community?

Giving back has always been a major part of how we think about building Foy. Each month, a portion of our sales helps support individuals facing minor cannabis-related charges so they can reunite with their families. We also donate to programs that support wounded or disabled military veterans and their families. Every Mother’s Day, we help bail out mothers so they can be home with their kids. We also sponsor free transportation to polling places in neighborhoods where access can be a barrier. These are ongoing commitments for us, not one-time moments.

What advice would you give to aspiring Black cannabis entrepreneurs?

Stay focused on what you’re trying to build and take the time to understand it fully. Do the research. Set up real conversations to gain wisdom from people in your space. Start small and be intentional. You don’t need to be everywhere right away. One store, one relationship, and one strong product can take you far. Cannabis is here to stay, so there’s no need to rush. Build with faith, discipline, and integrity. Your character will be tested, but if you stay true and keep working toward small, meaningful goals, you’ll eventually look back and see how far you’ve come.
